In engineering terms, stress is a force exerted to something, which in excess can lead to breakage. In biological terms, it’s almost the same thing. Stress is the extra amount of stress that our bodies exert in order to keep up with something we can’t normally do. For our bodies to do this, adrenalin is released and more blood is pumped to our muscles. This is called the fight or flight reaction, which helps us deal with threats. With stress, though, the threats are of another kind.
When we are facing deadlines that we think we couldn’t beat, when we receive too much workload for the day in the office, when our partners seem to want to break up with us, when we are about to go bankrupt but have a lot of mouths to feed, and whatever else that can put pressure in our lives, all this amounts to stress. The stress that we feel is actually a healthy
response. It gives us the innate ability to think clearly so we can make ends meet.
When circumstances persist, we start feeling that all our efforts are in vain. When these circumstances go on for days, weeks, months, or even years, our body, just like the object in engineering terms put under stress, will start to break down. This breaking down is reflected in stress symptoms such as headaches, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, and other physical symptoms. Mental symptoms include, but are not limited to, agitation, loss of focus, loss of morale, and occupational burnout. Stress if left unmanaged, can take its toll on our body. It can lead to a lot of serious physical health conditions such as heart disease; or mental conditions such as anxiety disorder.
Different individuals have different methods to relieve themselves of stress. The most commonly used technique is relaxation. In the western world, nothing can beat spirituality infused with exercise. This is called yoga. Yoga is a age old spiritual practice that originated in India, and as such seems to focus more on the religious side. When it came to the western shores, however, it became more a form of exercise. While its image changed from a spiritual affair to a physical one, still the fact remains that it can relax people.
Yoga is, for most part, composed of exercises, postures, and breathing techniques. Most of the stress-relieving techniques have been derived from knowledge of yoga. Breathing deeply, for instance, has a scientific explanation behind it; but yoga teaches its practitioners the different ways to breathe to achieve relaxation. Meditation is a trance-like state where the yogi is oblivious to everything around him/her – feeling at peace.
